How It Works

Attic ventilation helps keep a building dry, stable, and energy efficient. The goal is simple. Let fresh air in, let moist air out, and keep materials from staying wet.

The average 4-person household generates 2 to 4 gallons of moisture per day from cooking, showering, and breathing. Without proper ventilation, that moisture can get trapped—leading to mold growth and structural damage.

Even basements can add to the problem. A 1,000 sq. ft. uncoated foundation can let in over 30 gallons of moisture a week.

Design Basics We Follow

Use a balanced system, with most vent area at the soffits and the rest near the ridge.
Keep baffles in place at eaves so insulation does not block airflow.
Seal attic bypasses first. Air sealing and bath fan ducting to the outside improve results.
Size vents to the attic. Many codes use 1 to 150 or 1 to 300 net free vent area, depending on conditions.

Signs Ventilation May Be Off

Musty odor, staining, or frost on roof sheathing.
Rusty nail tips or damp insulation.
Ice dams, hot second floors, or shingles that age unevenly.
